Busy, Busy, Busy…oh, and Internet Problems!

I must sincerely apologize for leaving my blog for so long. It’s been nearly a week since I published my last blog post!

The past few days have been super busy for me. I’ve been quite preoccupied with getting ready for college. On Friday, I officially registered at Bermuda College. Then I returned to the college yesterday to just walk around campus and get a feel for  where all my classes are located while running a few errands there.

In addition to college registration, I’ve been busy studying for the GED test that is coming up in just 3 weeks. Math is my weakest subject so I’ve been working through an Algebra book to brush up on my Math skills. It’s not fun but I’m trying to enjoy it as these are also the last few weeks of homeschool for me. Yes, I’m graduating next month too!

And to make it even more difficult to blog here, I’ve been having some problems with my internet lately. I’m hoping to get it all fixed later today but for now I’m writing this post from the hotel’s lounge where they have a WiFi service.

Oh, and blogging isn’t the only thing that has taken a “back seat'”. Emails, craft projects, and a ton of other stuff have been getting neglected. :( Well, I guess I shouldn’t ramble on about how busy I am…I’m sure you all can relate at some time or another.

I hope that everyone is doing well and enjoying this autumn! Since I don’t have comment moderation turned on, your comments will be published automatically –regardless of if I have internet or not. So go ahead and say hello! Tell me what you’ve been up to and what’s been keeping you busy. I can’t wait to hear from y’all.

Blessings!

God Will Make A Way

Thursday evening, I had the opportunity to play “God Will Make A Way” on piano for Back To The Bible’s annual talent night. You might be familiar with Dr. Woodrow Kroll’s radio program and ministry. Each year, Dr. Kroll brings a group to Willowbank Hotel for a week of both relaxation and spiritual refreshing. We first met him last year and we were pleased to be able to meet with many of the same people who visited last year.

Sara filmed me playing so I can share it with all of you. Thanks, Sara! And Mom {in the green blouse} came up with me to turn the sheet music. Thanks, Mom!

I hope that all of you are enjoying this wonderful day that God has made!

Blessings!

Happy Birthday Mom!!!

Today’s my Mom’s birthday! We are blessed and thankful to God for giving us such a wonderful mother.

She’s committed the past 12 years or so to homeschooling us and making sure we get a good Christian education.

To me, she’s a great example of the Proverbs 31 woman and she is a wonderful encouragement to all of us.

Happy Birthday, dear Mom! I pray that God blesses you with many more birthdays!

Happy 12th Birthday, Leah!

My little sister, Leah’s birthday is today! Twelve years ago, she joined Sara and I and made a family of five.

She’s a sweet girl with a cheerful, serving spirit. I can’t imagine what our family would be like without her! She’s truly a blessing from God for our family.

We’re All Safe!

Just wanted to thank you for all your prayers! We’ve been truly blessed and spared. The worst of the storm passed us late last night…and the winds were HOWLING! It was amazing to listen to the huge amounts of energy that was being released by that hurricane!

I’m delighted to report that we never lost electricity during the storm! We woke up this morning to see the fan still spinning and the clock was telling the right time. :) Our house has sustained no damage and everyone in my family is safe! –even our two kitties, Onyx & Opal are fine! ;)

The large majority of our island is without electricity. We have one power company that provides the island with electricity and they reported that 30,000 of their 35,000 customers are without power this morning. I’m so AMAZED that we didn’t lose our power! Praise God!

The local Government has reported that there have been no deaths or major injuries! We do see lots of branches that have been blown over and even a few trees. I’ll try to take photos to share with you later. It’s still quite windy outside and raining off and on and the Police have asked that the public stays off the roads so that they {and other organizations/companies} can properly assess the damage. But the weather will only continue to improve and tropical storm force winds should ease by this afternoon. My family and I are observing Yom Kippur today and will be fasting until sunset so I won’t be online to chat or tweet but just thought to update everyone here!

Once again, it’s obvious that God has answered the prayers of His people! I cannot begin to thank you all enough for praying for us!

Have a blessed day! {and look out for my blogoversary post later today!}

Still Here!

Good morning friends! It's 6:10am and we're just getting some breakfast. :) The lights are still on but they're dipping in and out, so I’m sure they'll go out soon. Hurricane Igor has weakened to Category 1 storm! Praise God!

We're not in the clear though as it’s large storm and still moving slowly. The worst of the weather begins tonight with hurricane force winds supposed to begin closer to midnight. Please continue to pray for us!

I hope everyone has a blessed day!…I'm quite sure we'll lose power within the next hour or so. Bye for now! :D

P.S. You can read my previous blog post to find out how we’ve prepared for the storm and get links to local news sites for updates on the storm.

We’re just about ready…

So we’re just about finished all our preparations for the hurricane which is supposed to start with tropical storm force winds late tonight. We’ve brought all our outside stuff indoors so nothing gets taken away by the wind. We’ve also brought in quite a few potted plants that we normally keep outdoors.

IMGP5367 {We brought these beautiful vincas in so they can survive the storm}

I’ve just finished charging my laptop, iPod, and cell phone as we’re expecting to lose electricity sometime tonight or early tomorrow morning. My laptop will probably hold its charge for about 3 hours –after that it’ll go into “hibernation” and won’t boot again until I recharge it. I’m planning to leave my cell phone off, saving it’s charge for emergencies. And I’m going to be using my iPod sparingly so it can last at least a few days. :)

A bit of good news though: Hurricane Igor has weakened, albeit slightly and is now a category 2 storm. However, it’s a still a strong storm which has a lot of potential to cause lots of damage as it’s large {about 550 across} and moving slowly.

Thanks for leaving those sweet comments on my last post! I’m encouraged by them. :D Again, I’ll try to update y’all as I’m able to but we’re unplugging the internet modem, router, and all other electrical stuff in a few minutes to protect them from lightning storms and power outages. So it’s likely this will be my last post for at least the next several days. :(

Don’t despair though! Monday is my 1 year blogging anniversary and I have a scheduled post {complete with an AWESOME giveaway!} that will be automatically published –regardless of if I have internet or not.

Hope everyone has a blessed week and thanks for your continued prayers!

Hurricane Preparations

Hurricane Igor is still on track to hit us directly as aIMGP5381 Category 3 hurricane  this weekend. It’s been 7 years since a major hurricane has come ashore to Bermuda. In September 2003 Hurricane Fabian hit our island, tragically taking the lives of four people and causing millions of dollars in damage. Our local Government and Weather Service has forecasted that Hurricane Igor will be just as bad or worse than Fabian.

So these past two days or so I’ve been busy helping my family prepare for the storm. We’ve been stocking up on non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods like canned fruits and veggies, crackers, and lots dry cereal.

Dad also purchased a couple of flashlights and plenty of candles.
This morning, Jude and I went and did a little shopping in the village. We picked up some first aid supplies and took some “before” photos of our neighborhood.

{Mangrove Bay just near our home was already looking gloomy this morning}

The worst of the weather is predicted to take place close to midnight on Sunday night –just on the eve of Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement which our family will be observing from sunset on Sunday until sunset on Monday.

We’ll likely lose power sometime Saturday night as we’re expecting tropical force winds to begin tomorrow evening. When the power goes out, we’ll lose our internet service as well and I won’t be able to keep all of you updated. :( When hurricane Fabian hit us, the electricity company took nearly 3 weeks to restore power to our neighborhood but I’m really hoping that we won’t have to wait nearly as long this time around.

My siblings and I plan to keep ourselves happily occupied with puzzles, games, and lots of books. Of course, I’ll be knitting and crocheting too. ;)

This afternoon, I was able to mail 10 of the 25 postcards that need to be mailed to everyone who left a comment on my 150th blog post. I’m planning to mail the rest as soon as I’m able to. :-)

This weekend, please remember to keep my family and I in your prayers. And I appreciate every prayer that’s offered up on our behalf!

Blessings to all of you…I’ll be back to update you as soon as I can!

P.S. Monday is my 1 year blogoversary and I’ve finished writing a post with details and a GIVEAWAY and scheduled for it to be posted Monday. So y’all will still have something to read here on my blog!

What Happened To My Wisdom Teeth…

It’s been almost 3 weeks since I got all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. And since it’s a common surgery for teens around my age, I thought to write about what happened when I went in to the hospital. Hopefully it’ll help anyone who has to get their wisdom teeth pulled too!

When I was first told that I had to get all four of my wisdom teeth pulled, I was quite scared at the thought of being put under general anesthesia. It would be the first time I was to have surgery in my life! Everyone I talked to assured me that it’ll be easy and that there wasn’t anything to worry about. Of course, since I hadn’t gone through it myself it was hard for me to believe them!

I was not to eat or drink anything after midnight the day before my surgery so I was happy when my appointment was set for 7am. At least I wouldn’t have to fast for the whole morning before my surgery!

hospitalpic1_edited-2Of course, Mom came with me to the hospital and when we arrived we waited in a small waiting room for a few minutes. Soon a nurse called me into a small room. First, she weighed me and confirmed what kind of surgery I was there to have. She asked me if I had any allergies, and then put an I.D. bracelet around my hand.

Next, we were sent to another room and I was handed a bag to put all my clothes in and given a gown to change in to. They also gave me a cap to put on my head and "booties" for my feet. When I was finished changing, another nurse came in and took my temperature and my blood pressure. Mom and I chatted for a few minutes and even took a few pictures of me with her cell phone. :-)

Soon someone from the O.R. came through to take me in to the surgical ward. He was pleasant but I had to say goodbye to my Mom at that point. And even though I felt fine up until then, I was very scared as well and I started to cry. But the nurses there were so nice! They told me I'd be okay and promised that to take good care of me.

After I said goodbye to Mom, I was wheeled in a bed to what they said was the "induction room". There I met with the anesthesiologist who asked me when was the last time I had food/drink, if I had any allergies/diseases, and then he listened to my heart and felt for my pulse. I was still crying at this point, but he was very good at answering all my questions and made me feel safe. I also had a chance to talk with the surgeon again and he answered any more questions that I had and promised to do a good job. Before long, I felt much better and actually felt pretty calm. I know God was helping me and giving me courage to go through it!

Soon, they wheeled me into the O.R. which was right next to the induction room. There are quite a few people in there but they were all pleasant and introduced themselves. One nurse did most of the pre-op work on me and chatted with me the whole time to keep me happy. :-) She put a blood pressure cuff on my hand, then put sticky pads on my chest for the heart monitor. When she was finished with that, the anesthesiologist put the I.V. in. This was my very first time getting an I.V. But he did a good job and got it done quickly. The nurse distracted me by chatting about my weekend while he actually put the needle in. It only hurt for 2 or 3 seconds, and then it was fine. It wasn’t much to be afraid of, really!

Once the I.V. was in the anesthesiologist started putting in several medications. The nurse put a small mask over my mouth and nose that had oxygen in it for me to breathe. Then the anesthesiologist told me he's going to put in the the stuff to make me go sleep. I watched him put it all in to the I.V. line and then I don't remember anything else. I don't remember "falling" asleep or even feeling sleepy. I was awake one second, and sleeping the next. The very next thing I remember is waking up in the recovery room.

My mouth was numbed up and a nurse called my name many times to make sure I was conscious and then let me sleep off the anesthesia for an hour or so. Next they removed all the sticky pads and the I.V. line. Then I was wheeled back to where I started. My Mom was waiting there for me. I slept there for another hour or so before I got dressed again. The nurse got a wheelchair and took me down to the parking lot.

Looking back, the surgery wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. But recovery is definitely harder than the surgery itself. I was prescribed 3 different medications; two for pain and one was an antibiotic. One of the pills made me feel dizzy constantly but at least I didn’t have much pain. On the first day, I spent the afternoon sleeping off all the anesthesia. Then Mom made me a delicious smoothie for supper. The next few days were a blur and I spent most of my time just resting and eating smoothies. By the time a week was up, I felt ready to go to the pool with some friends. This was a mistake though, as my mouth felt really sore afterwards! But the surgeon’s office told me to just rest and take my medications as directed.

It’s now been almost three weeks since I got my wisdom teeth taken out. I feel almost 100% back to normal. Praise God! I’m still taking Tylenol because my mouth is sore when I eat but the dizziness is gone away and I can do a lot more around the house.

I'm so glad the wisdom teeth surgery is behind me! I'll never have to get my wisdom teeth pulled again. Woohoo!!! And even though I'm still nervous about seeing an oral surgeon, I'm happy I was able to go through with it! God gave me special strength and courage to endure this trial and I’m so grateful to Him!

I mentioned before the surgery that the surgeon was planning to put in a small orthodontic screw at the same time he pulled my wisdom teeth. Unfortunately, the surgeon was unable to put it in because he said the area wasn’t strong enough to hold it. Now I have to wait another six weeks for everything to heal before I can get the screw put in and continue with my braces. But next time it’ll be a simple procedure done in his office!

I hope that sharing my story has helped y’all feel better about it. And if you have to get the same thing done, don't worry…it'll be over before you know it!

A Little Bit About Bermuda

bermuda1

On the reader survey I posted a couple of weeks ago, many of you mentioned  you’d like to know more about what it’s like to live in Bermuda. And since I haven’t really introduced you to my island home, I thought I should write an post about Bermuda!

Okay, so first the basics… Bermuda is an island in the Atlantic Ocean located about 600 miles off North Carolina’s coast. It is just 21 miles long and a mere one mile wide so we’re never more than a short walk away from the beach! Our climate is sub-tropical which keeps the temperature here mild year-round. We don’t have any rivers, lakes, or streams so we rely on rainfall for our fresh water. Our island is the top of an undersea mountain, complete with three extinct volcanoes!

bermuda2But I have to admit that life here is not very  different from life in any another Western country. We work, play, and go to school (or home school!) like most people do elsewhere. But I think what makes life here unique is the fact that the country we call home is so tiny! We only have one official city (the capital, Hamilton), one town, and two villages! And because the island is small, the roads are small too. Each family is allowed just one car so motorbikes are a popular alternative. Even with these strict vehicle regulations, the rush hour traffic into our capital city is no fun!bermuda3

Because we’re surrounded by water, almost everything has to imported. Food, clothes, toys, vehicles, gasoline…you name it, it has to be imported! This makes the cost of living rather expensive. Here in Bermuda you can expect to pay up to double the U.S. price for basics like food, gas, and even clothing. We pay close to $4 for a loaf of bread and apples are usually a dollar each!  And with limited residential space, real estate and housing gets pricy too! The average family home sells for more than a million U.S. dollars; and renting prices are steep too.

But in my opinion, it’s all worth it. Living in Bermuda, I always look forward to waking up in the morning to fresh ocean breezes, or taking that short 2 minute walk to the beach. My family and I have fun walking along the railway trail and watching the sea gulls, and love taking evening strolls down to the pier to feed the colorful fish. Bermuda is where I was born –it’s where my father was born. It’s beautiful place to grow up and live in and I feel privileged to be here! Yes, I’m truly blessed!

bermuda6

What do you like most about living in your country? What makes your neighborhood special? I want to hear your thoughts in a comment below!

I hope everyone’s having a blessed week!

A Visit to Fort St. Catherine

Last Friday, another home school family and a couple of friends joined us for a visit to Fort St. Catherine located in St. George's parish. We've been wanting to see this fort for quite awhile so we were all excited to be finally going there! Fort St. Catherine was built shortly after the first settlers arrived on the island making it almost 400 years old. It was rebuilt and extended over the centuries to accommodate new weapons and methods of war. However, not long after the World War II, it was abandoned and remained so for several years before it was reopened as a museum and tourist attraction. I particularly enjoyed looking at life-size displays showing the life of a soldier in the fort. Gun collections, artifacts, and ammunition make the museum and fort one interesting place! Once we were finished reading all about the fort and looking over the displays, we enjoyed a breath-taking view from the keep's roof. From there, we were able to see the Dockyard which is at the opposite end of Bermuda! After touring the fort, we enjoyed a simple picnic lunch just outside the fort grounds. It was hot on Friday but Mom came prepared with semi-frozen mixed fruit. It was a delicious ending to an enjoyable trip!

Long Summer Days

This shady tree in our front yard is a favorite summer spot for us!
Oh the long, hot days of summer! The temperature this week has been hovering around 85 degrees which isn't too bad by itself, but Bermuda is famous for it's high level of humidity and heat plus humidity can make for some not-so-pleasant summer weather! We've been trying to stay cool and comfortable by swimming in the afternoons and staying near the fans and air conditioning during the hottest hours of the day! While indoors, I've been working steadily on both the friendship afghan and apron swap, studying, and reading lots of books. It's so easy to slip into the "lazy summer" attitude but I've been striving to be productive and remain cool at the same time!

Many of my afternoons are occupied with Project Ride classes. I'm preparing for the riding test that I'll be taking on Friday. I've been working with the instructor for almost 2 weeks now and really look forward to passing the test and getting my license so I can ride a motorbike!

Because of the heat, gardening has been somewhat neglected over the past few weeks. We try to do most of our outdoor activities early in the morning or shortly before sunset when it's a bit cooler. Exercise, swimming, and trips out to the post office, grocery store, and field trips are all done during the more comfortable times of day leaving little time for gardening and other hard outdoor jobs. So the garden has taken a seat on the back-burner for now. When the weather cools a bit, we'll continue once more as I really enjoy gardening!

Mom took these photos for me while we had fun in the pool:

I'm staying cool and having fun at the same time!

Leah & Jude enjoy playing with each other in the pool!

On a quick side note: I would like to thank everyone who has left an encouraging comment for me on my last post about my upcoming surgery. Mom signed the consent forms on Monday and now we're just waiting for an appointment. Because we only have one medical hospital on the island, all the surgeons have to wait for open time slots in the OR. But I'm praying that I get an appointment sooner rather than later...

Hope everyone is having a blessed, productive week!
